It Starts With Stone
Asphalt is roughly 95% aggregate by weight. That aggregate — a blend of crushed stone, sand, and mineral fines — comes from local quarries and is carefully sized and graded before it ever reaches the plant.
The gradation (the mix of coarse and fine particles) determines how the finished pavement will behave. A commercial parking lot mix uses different stone than a highway surface course, and both differ from a driveway mix.
The Binder
The remaining 5% is asphalt cement — a heavy petroleum product refined from crude oil. Modern binders are graded by a "Performance Grade" (PG) system that describes the temperature range where the material will perform. In Middle Georgia we most often see PG 64-22 or PG 67-22 binders, engineered for our hot summers and mild winters.
Inside the Hot-Mix Plant
At the plant, aggregate is dried in a rotating drum at about 300°F to remove moisture. The dried stone is then combined with heated liquid binder in precise proportions dictated by the approved mix design. The result — hot-mix asphalt, or HMA — leaves the plant at 275°F to 325°F.
Time and Temperature Are the Enemy
From the moment HMA is loaded into an insulated dump truck, the clock is running. Asphalt must be delivered, laid, and compacted before it cools below workable temperature. That is why job timing, plant proximity, and weather conditions matter so much.

At the Paver
The paver spreads asphalt at a controlled thickness and initial density. Rollers immediately follow — first a heavy steel breakdown roller, then intermediate and finish rollers — to achieve the specified compaction, typically 92% to 96% of theoretical maximum density.
Compaction is where craftsmanship shows. Under-compacted asphalt looks fine on day one and ravels apart within a year.

Understanding how asphalt is made helps you evaluate a contractor's proposal. Ask which plant supplies the mix, which PG binder is specified, and what compaction target the crew works to. A contractor who cannot answer those questions confidently is not the contractor you want on your property.

Why does asphalt have to be laid hot?
The binder must be liquid enough to coat every stone and allow the mix to be compacted. Once it cools, the pavement is set.
What is recycled asphalt (RAP)?
Reclaimed asphalt pavement is milled from old roads and added back into new mix. Modern mixes commonly use 15-25% RAP without sacrificing performance.
Does rain ruin fresh asphalt?
Light rain after compaction is usually fine. Rain during laydown can cool the mix too quickly and cause density and bonding problems.
