Every good layout begins with traffic flow. Where do vehicles enter? Where do they exit? Which drives will fire apparatus and delivery trucks use? Answers to these questions dictate everything else.
Space Dimensions
- Standard car space: 9 feet wide by 18 feet deep is common in retail
- Compact space: 8 to 8.5 feet wide, marked as such
- Truck / long space: 10 feet wide by 20+ feet deep

Local zoning ordinances can require different dimensions — always verify against the current code.
Angles
- 90 degrees: highest capacity, two-way traffic
- 60 degrees: faster entry, one-way traffic, needs more drive width
- 45 degrees: easiest entry, lowest capacity per square foot
Drive Aisle Widths
- 22 to 24 feet for two-way traffic with 90-degree parking
- 18 to 20 feet for one-way angled parking
- Fire apparatus and delivery routes may require more
Circulation Elements
- Stop bars and yield markings at every conflict point
- Directional arrows in all one-way drives
- Crosswalks between accessible spaces and building entrances
- Speed bumps or tables at pedestrian-heavy zones
- No-parking zebra striping in loading and turning areas

Layout is not just paint — it is landscape islands, curb radii, and sign placement. A striping plan that ignores sight lines produces a lot people cannot navigate safely.
